Mumbai/New York Comparative Study

As part of a studio focused on an urban intervention in the Elphinstone neighborhood of Mumbai, analysis between the vernacular buildings of Mumbai and buildings in a Western vernacular. The Gorham Building by McKim, Meade, and White offered a very similar composition to the Bharat Insurance building with the arcuated openings on the first floor. Given its location, the Gorham building closes these voids with glass and doors to match the colder climate of New York.

The Bharat Insurance Building fronts Horniman Circle Gardens in Mumbai, a garden developed in the mid 19th century. The building itself has similarities to the Gorham building in composition and use of architectural orders, as British architecture influenced the architecture in India at the time. The Insurance building maintains unique aspects of Indian vernacular in such elements as the open-air arcuated bays to match the warmer climate of Mumbai. The top story also features traditional brackets that support the roof, seen in the section to the side.
